Client: The British Land Company
With its imposing eight-storey Neo-Classical facade, Plantation House in Fenchurch Street was one of the best known buildings in the City of London. It consisted of of 32,500m2 (350,000ft2) of multi- tenanted space and the refurbishment not only involved renovating some thirty office suites to commercial standards but also required a complete transformation of the entire internal public environment.
This involved respecting the existing proportions and details whilst introducing new materials to create a fresh 'new-old' dialogue.
In addition, a special presentation suite was installed on the ground floor adjacent to the main reception, and was fitted with a bar and sophisticated audio-visual equipment for both management and tenant use.
The major challenge in replanning the building however proved to be the circulation which consisted of five entrances and five separate lift cores connected via an un-navigable warren of corridors. A comprehensive orientation system was therefore devised which included purpose designed directories at each entrance, plus a novel 'line of sight' signage system and boldly coloured lifts.
