The Theatre was intended to become the centrepiece of a new arts quarter in Newcastle but the most pressing problems were to add to the back-of-house facilities, increase the foyer size, and link the Playhouse Theatre at the front with the Gulbenkian Studio Theatre at the rear - achieved here by wrapping the entire structure inside a cor-ten steel labyrinthine wall - like a vast Richard Serra sculpture.
