Kolkata, India
Kolkata is a city of 10 Million people and growing. To help absorb this enormous growth
a New Town has been established on the perimeter of the city, near to the international
airport. The New Town has a target population of 1 Million and at its centre, Avery
Associates have been commissioned for this new development.
The development comprises 52,000m2 (560,000ft2) of mixed-uses including one
hundred shops, offices, a fitness centre, ice-skating rink, swimming pool, two cinemas, a
banqueting suite, several restaurants and a range of apartments in a thirty storey tower.
The form has been structured as a metaphor of the West Bengal landscape. It
represents the topographical transitions from the flat flood plains of the Ganges delta up
to the tea terraces of Darjeeling and on to the glaciers of the Himalayas and the great
peak of Kanchendzonga, the highest mountain in India.
