It was after seeing Jamie Callum perform in the Hall in the Spring of 2004 that the idea began to germinate that the Hall was a very much underused asset and one with a very valuable but rather hidden potential.
The idea was that if the existing back-of-house facilities could be demolished and replaced by a new extension - a structure that would accommodate new dressing rooms, toilets, management offices, and most crucially, a new cafe and bar - then this would release space for more valuable performance uses and increase the hall's audience capacity very considerably. It would also place the new bar and cafe in a very much more accessible and profitable position overlooking Imperial Square.
This re-orientation towards the square then lead to the conclusion that the extension might even become the principal public entrance. This would not only give the hall a highly visible public profile and enable it to operate as an audience 'hub' during festival times, but it would also provide the basis for a further expansion to include a new gallery or concert hall later.
