Charterhouse Mews
Client:Hewitt Associates
Hewitt Associates, one of the leading management consultancy firms in the United States, invited Avery Associates to convert a small three storey mews building as their base for London operations.
The building was restructured to accommodate small work stations and private offices on two levels, but on the third, a special conference space was required for confidential client meetings. This required a presence commensurate with the company's global reputation, but with a relaxed atmosphere and intimacy that would put visitors at ease.
The space was very limited - a single room, awkwardly shaped and with a ceiling height of just 2.45m. Into this was fitted a 14 seat conference table, casual seating, projection and seminar equipment, a bar, a library, and air conditioning plant for the rest of the building.
The design owes much to Soane and uses a visually detached, secondary structure to articulate the main space off which four small poches have been extended.
