The design for the new Opera House was intended to give expression externally to the character and content of the operatic performances within and to use this as a catalyst for the regeneration of the inner harbour area.
Environmentally, the building was shielded from the prevailing winds by stonework "cliffs", complete with sheltered arbours and clefts - a metaphor for the coastal landscape of South Wales itself.
