Concept Car
Readers of The Telegraph on Saturday 2 July 2005 (Motoring section) may have noticed that
the results of a competition for the design of a new compact city car included a design by Avery Associates Architects. In fact, two designs were submitted by the practice, the cellular sedan of 1987, and this one, the 2005 panoramic runabout. Unfortunately, like all good newspapers, they wrote about one and showed the other.
So, herewith is the panoramic runabout, designed to have the minimum length for four people but with the maximum possible (permanent) load capacity. Thus the new passenger seats have been lifted up to create a great boot depth for luggage, tools and shopping, etc, but with the height also for vertical timbers, ladders and so on. It also creates a special vantage point, like the observation lounge of a transcontinental train, which restores the 'privilege' that used to be the rear passengers' delight.
