Advanced Technology Housing
Our research into the potential for utilising new technology and
high-performance materials to build energy efficient housing resulted in
the Advanced Technology Housing (ATH) concept; a new prototype for high
density, urban living.
The ultimate objective of this concept is to make the central city once
again an attractive place to live and to exploit brown-field sites currently
considered marginal for conventional developments.
The ATH concept can accommodate a variety of dwelling sizes but notably
addresses the growing demand for smaller housing units which comprise as
much as 80% of the projected housing need. It is anticipated that such
an approach could incorporate a high level of factory fabrication to enable
rapid site work and improved quality.
Sponsored by Otis, the ATH design was awarded a UNESCO bronze medal and was at the RIBA on display in London during 1998.
The following is an extract from the London Evening Standard:
"Bryan Avery, of Avery Associates, reckons he has come up with the
perfect solution to London's soaring property prices: a space saving house. 'The idea is that the unit could be backed on to car parks, factories or shopping centres,' he says. 'The biggest cost of houses is not the construction
but the price of land.'"
